Older adults consistently experience the greatest proportion of casualties during and after natural disasters compared to younger age groups. This report, based on a review of the latest evidence and legislation on disaster preparedness, response and recovery for older adults, is authored by the American Red Cross and the American Academy of Nursing. The research identifies strategies and resources to improve both disaster preparedness among older adults and response efforts, noting that a clear need exists for both greater disaster preparedness and response education as well as the standardization of protocols for health care professionals and emergency responders.
